Deep within the lush forests of India, a tiny creature with big eyes and a gentle demeanor has just found a new haven. The Tamil Nadu state government declared India’s first and only Slender Loris sanctuary, a dedicated space for these nocturnal primates to thrive.
Slender Lorises, also known as Vangu in Tamil, are small, shy primates with incredibly large, saucer-like eyes that help them see clearly in the dark. They are nocturnal creatures, spending most of their time in the trees, where they skillfully navigate the branches in search of insects and fruits.
These gentle animals play a vital role in maintaining healthy forests by keeping insect populations in check. They are also known for their adorable habit of sleeping cuddled together in groups, providing warmth and companionship.
Sadly, Slender Lorises are facing threats from habitat loss, poaching, and illegal pet trade. Their numbers have dwindled significantly, making them an endangered species. The creation of the Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary is a crucial step towards protecting these precious creatures.
Situated across nearly 12,000 hectares of forest in the Dindigul and Karur districts, the sanctuary will provide a safe haven for two subspecies of Slender Lorises: the Mysore Slender Loris and the Malabar Slender Loris. It will also serve as a home for many other species that share the same habitat.
This initiative by the Tamil Nadu government is particularly significant because smaller animals often get overlooked when it comes to conservation efforts. Usually, it’s the larger, more charismatic animals like elephants and tigers that receive dedicated protected areas. However, the Slender Loris, with its small stature and shy nature, is just as important to the ecosystem.
By dedicating a sanctuary to Slender Lorises, India is sending a powerful message that it is committed to protecting all its wildlife, regardless of size or popularity. This is a commendable step towards ensuring that these gentle guardians of the night can continue to grace our forests for generations to come.
