Elephant seals: surprising sleep habits

Elephant seals are amazing creatures that hardly sleep when they are in the ocean. Its fascinating to know that they are the largest living carnivores, weighing upto 8800 pounds. Recent research has revealed that these incredible animals sleep for just two hours a day on average. Elephant seals spend most of their time in the ocean, diving deep and searching for food for about seven months each year. Despite their enormous size, they have to be cautious of sharks and orcas while they’re in the water. To unravel the mystery of their sleep patterns, a scientist named Jessica Kendall Bar came up with a clever solution. She created a special cap that could monitor the brain activity of 13 young elephant seals. This cap measured their heart rates, body movements, and the depth of their swims. The surprising findings showed that these seals only took short naps while diving deep. They slept for about 10 minutes at a time! This suggests that they make up for their lack of sleep when they return to land. On land, these incredible creatures sleep for approximately 10.8 hours every day.
